This is a season when one ventures out a lot, in the hot burning environment. To
balance ourselves we need cooling foods, cooling oils on our skin to protect us from the
outdoors which we love in summer, stay indoors during the full sun times and enjoy the
vegetables of the season. Summer is the season to age so we need to get a summer
season program to keep us young.

Heat and Fire are termed Pitta in Ayurveda.
There are Pitta People and Pitta Season (summer) and Pitta time in the day
(mid-day) Pitta Modalities - Pitta
people are fiery. The eyes, enzymes, body heat are pitta organs and functions.
Mental Attributes: alert, intelligent, good comprehension,
easily agitated, aggressive, tendency toward hate, anger and jealousy when in imbalance.
Pitta people are leaders, planners and seek material prosperity. They like to exhibit
their wealth and possessions when in imbalance will show off.
Physical Attributes: medium build, fair skin with
moles and freckles, warm bodies, soft hair that may grey prematurely and have hair loss.
Internal Modality - strong metabolism, good digestion, strong appetites,
perspire easily, lower tolerance for sunlight, heat or hard physical work, sleep well and
of medium duration.

Summer Living -
Since the attributes of Pitta are oily, hot, light, mobile, and liquid, an excess of any
of these qualities aggravates Pitta. Summer is a time of heat, the Pitta season. Sunburn,
poison ivy, prickly heat, and short tempers are common. These kinds of Pitta disorders
tend to calm down as the weather gets cooler. Resting during the high heat of the
day is recommended and protection from the sun between 10.30 am to 3.30 p.m. is
recommended.
Summer or Pitta diet - A summer or Pitta diet to create beauty consists of cooling foods and plenty of
liquids. In summer hot spices like garam masala and too many chilies should be
avoided. Sweet cooling fruits, cucumbers, salads, greens should be the diet to
balance the fire of Pitta.
Summer Beauty - (Pitta people have sensitive skins, are medium build,
have medium sized pores). In this season there is a tendency toward blotches and
pimples. Soft, fine and oily hair with early graying. A protective beauty regiment with
Bindi oils is recommended.

Triphala, Punarnavadi, Kaishore Guggul, Vasavaleha, Nimba, Ashoka, Chyawanprash, Haridra,
Brahmi, Gokshura.

FOR BEAUTIFUL SKIN

The sun has always been a prime offender
against the skin. Solar radiation is a factor in the breakdown of collagen and elastin,
which leads to premature aging and wrinkles. Summer heat aggravates Pitta in
general, leading to skin sensitivity and sebaceous secretions. |
· - Sesame and Neem Oil are excellent natural
sunscreens, according to Ayurveda.
·- After sunbathing, take a cool bath, adding a few drops rose, sandalwood essence
to the water.
· - Massage damp body with Bindis Pitta Body Oil.
· - To treat sunburned skin, rub on either crushed cucumber, cucumber juice, aloe vera
juice, an infusion of elderflower and chamomile, or cold buttermilk.
In general, sensitive skin types (Pitta) tend to turn red rather than tan in the sun, and
also develop freckles. Dry (Vata) and Oily (Kapha) skin types both tan easily.
Nevertheless, nothing ages the skin more quickly than a sunburn, so individuals of every
skin type should take precautions to protect themselves from the sun. |
